THE RADON REPORTER | 19 Testing Requirements The IRC Appendix AF (2021) and Appendix BE (2024) require testing (adoptions highlighted in the map above). The 2027 version will be even more protective. The data for this map is posted here. States, tribes, and other stakeholders should pursue adoption of the most recent edition. IRC Edition Testing Requirement Radon Zone Map/List Deleted; ANSI/AARST RRNC Alternative Allowed; Fan Space and Vertical Pipe Added 1995-2018 (Appendix F) NO NO 2021 (Appendix AF) YES NO 2024 (Appendix BE) YES NO 2027 (Appendix BE) YES YES The testing requirement in Appendix AF and Appendix BE generally includes closed building conditions consistent with industry consensus standards. It specifies: • A post-mitigation testing result below 4 pCi/L must be provided to the code official. - Installation of a fan / other system modification needed if the initial test failed. • A builder, design professional, or an approved third party may use a commercially available kit to conduct the radon test. • Only an approved third party may use a continuous radon monitor to conduct the test. As states, tribes, and localities adopt Appendix AF or BE, implementation of the testing requirement will get builders in the habit of passing the radon test by ensuring their subcontractors follow an effective protocol and properly install the radon control system.
