LESSONS LEARNED FROM EVALUATING AND INSTALLING RADON MITIGATION SYSTEMS FOR THE NAVY AND AIR FORCE IN THE PACIFIC Bill Brodhead WPB Enterprises, Inc., 2844 Slifer Valley Rd., Riegelsville, PA USA ABSTRACT The author presents the lessons learned from evaluating existing radon systems and installing hundreds of new radon mitigation systems for the Navy and Air Force in Okinawa, Japan and for the Navy in Guam. Military housing in the Pacific is predominately slab on grade construction. Older residential buildings often had compacted soil under the slab. The buildings are also built to withstand typhoons and consequently are very air tight. Being in proximity to the ocean also caused significant corrosion of system components. This paper discusses the techniques used to overcome compacted soil, re-enforced concrete, slab on grade construction, salt air corrosion, typhoons as well as solutions to the problems of radon testing in these climates.
