News and Events for the Radon and Vapor Intrusion Industry

2nd Public Review: Revised CCAH (New Home Construction)

CCAH: Reducing Radon Soil Gas Control in New Construction of One & Two Family Dwellings and Townhouses

Consistent with ANSI requirements for harmonization of standards, the proposed revisions to CCAH are holistic relative to more recent harmonization work on ANSI/AARST CC-1000. The scope is broadened to include both radon and other soil gas hazards. The format is step-by-step through design and implementation. These steps and details vastly increase the chances of passive benefits while optimizing energy conservation when operating fans where active soil depressurization (ASD) is desired or found needed. Both a redlined mockup of public review content and a clean read mockup of the resulting revised standard are available to download.

NRPP Credentialing Updates

The mitigation and measurement JTAs are almost completed. Remember the JTA surveys we asked your assistance with? Your responses helped the JTA committees refine their respective JTA and the committees are using these documents to establish certification requirements.

Each JTA defines the responsibilities of the certified professional and outlines what the professional needs to know and do to successfully perform their job, whether measuring or mitigating radon in single family or commercial buildings.

A Sneak Peek at What’s New….

NRPP is moving to a modular or “stacked” credentialing model. With the inclusion of vapor intrusion and with more credentials on the horizon, the new strategy allows the candidate to map out a clear career pathway within and across credentials.

Highlights:
● The current RMP and RMS credentials will focus on single family residential buildings.
● The Mitigation Installer certification will be a base installer certification, recognizing the knowledge and skills needed for installation of a mitigation system. The certified mitigation installer will be certified to install radon mitigation systems in single family or commercial buildings as well as vapor intrusion mitigation systems.
● The commercial credentials will assess the knowledge and skills needed for commercial/large building measurement or mitigation beyond what is required for single family mitigation and measurement.

The commercial JTA committees are working on creating various pathways to commercial certification. The certification requirements for someone who is currently single family certified will be different from those individuals who have not done, and have no interest in doing, single family measurement or mitigation (i.e., engineers). Although we do not have the pathways fully defined right now we anticipate there being multiple ways to obtain commercial mitigation or measurement certification.

If You Are NRPP Certified….

Please take a moment to make sure your contact information in your certification profile is current and includes your personal email address.

This is important for two reasons:

1. If you leave your job or change employers, NRPP will not have a way to contact you or send you updates and notices about your certification and you may miss important information.
2. This certification belongs to you and not your employer. As long as your certification is current you are NRPP certified, even if you change jobs or start working for another company. If we only have your work email on file, see #1 above.

NRPP Exam Item Writers Needed!

NRPP is preparing to begin writing test questions for the new exams and are seeking writers who have the following experience:

• Mitigation system installation in single family and commercial or other large buildings (Radon Mitigation Installer and Specialist)
• Oversight of mitigation system installation, including design and quality management, in single family and commercial or other large buildings (Radon Mitigation Specialist)
• Radon measurement in single family and commercial or other large buildings (Radon Measurement Field Technician and Professional).

NRPP will hold virtual training sessions to teach volunteers how to write test questions. Participants will then write and review questions in NRPP’s virtual platform. If you are interested in contributing to the new exams and setting the bar for incoming professionals, please complete this form if you would like to participate. Recruitment will begin in late July.

Indoor Environments Association is a nonprofit, professional organization of members who are dedicated to the highest standard of excellence and ethical performance of hazard identification and abatement of radon, chemical vapor intrusion, and other contaminants of concern in the built environment. The organization primarily strives to advance the interests of its members through developing industry standards, certifying technical proficiency, enabling advancement of public policy, and communicating health risks to the public.

Editorial Content Wanted: Indoor Environments Association (AARST) publishes content over two platforms. We are interested in radon and vapor intrusion interest stories, technical papers, business topics, health advancements/detection regarding radon-related issues, and more.
