Success in Changing the IRC Radon Appendix
IEA, American Lung Association, Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors, US Environmental Protection Agency, and National Center for Healthy Housing submitted code change proposals and comments to the International Code Council to improve the Radon Appendix in the International Residential Code. In May, the IRC-B Committee approved permitting adherence to the ANSI-AARST RRNC standard as an alternative pathway for compliance with the protocol in the Radon Appendix. During its second hearing October 23 in Cleveland, the IRC-B Committee approved removing the EPA map and county list, requiring 4.5 feet of perforated pipe on each side of the Tee under a slab or vapor barrier, and requiring that the pipe in the attic be located in an unobstructed cylindrical space to allow for fan installation.

CRCPD Publishes Advisory: Radon Testing with Consumer Digital Radon Monitors

The Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors (CRCPD) has published an advisory for radon testing using a Consumer Digital Radon Monitor (CDRM). CDRMs can be purchased online or in retail stores and are used for monitoring radon continuously. The advisory explains some of the cautions for using these monitors and verifying results. Key points of the advisory include:
• CDRMs are NOT for testing during real estate transactions.
• CDRMs are NOT for making radon mitigation decisions.

IEA Podcast: Episode 4

When No One’s Watching: The Ethics Episode
In this episode of The Indoor Environment Project, host Diane Swecker sits down with Amy Roedl, NRPP Director of Proficiency, and Mark Ungerer, Health Physicist Supervisor with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, for an honest and thought-provoking conversation about ethics in the radon and indoor environmental industries.
Together, they explore what ethical behavior really looks like in day-to-day practice, the difference between technical and conduct violations, how complaints are investigated, and why doing the right thing—especially when no one’s watching—builds trust and credibility across our profession.
Feedback Sought on the Radon Data Dictionary
Interested radon stakeholders are invited to participate in a survey regarding proposed changes to the Radon Data Dictionary used for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Environmental Public Health Tracking Network, which receives and publishes radon test data reported through labs and state radon programs. EPHT has provided important information for more than a decade. Over the past several years, updates and improvements to the Radon Data Dictionary have been suggested to address insufficient descriptions of multiple tests of the same unit, missing items required by the ANSI-AARST standards, inadequate descriptors of buildings, and other issues. There is now a draft revised data dictionary. Feedback on the proposed changes (one response per business please) can be provided through this SURVEY. Deadline: Monday December 1. IEA will compile the results for submission to CDC.
