Federal Appropriations: News From Capitol Hill
Congress reached an agreement to fund the federal government in March, a scant six months into the fiscal year ending September 30, 2022. Highlights:
- EPA’s State Indoor Radon Grant (SIRG) program will receive another $500,000 during FY 22 to bring the total to $8,295,000.
- The appropriators recommend that EPA prioritize SIRG grants to states that have adopted or are seeking to adopt statewide radon building codes, conduct awareness and education programs for homebuyers and renters, and have in place adequate certification or credentialing requirements for radon measurement and mitigation workers.
- The appropriators direct EPA to continue to operate the radon program as in fiscal year 2021 and maintain the U.S. source standard for radon gas for use by states and industry as the national benchmark for radon measurement devices.
- HUD’s $5 million radon demonstration in public housing will be funded for a second year.
Mitigation Compliance Inspector –
Perfect for Home Inspectors
Last October, the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) implemented a new certification of special interest to home inspectors: Soil Gas Mitigation Compliance Inspector (SGM-CI). The role of this inspection is to verify whether an installed radon mitigation system complies with the latest version of ANSI-AARST SGM-SF Soil Gas Mitigation Standards for Existing Homes.
It only applies where a system is present. The credential includes secure access to the SGM-CI Inspection phone app; once you submit the required photos and complete the checklist, the app will generate a PDF report you can send to your client directly from the site.
